Portfolio

This portfolio is a glimpse into my workshop - chisels ringing, mallets striking and letters forming. Within this page you’ll find a collection of house signs, memorials and bespoke inscriptions. Each made by hand and designed to endure. It’s not just a record of finished pieces, but a reflection of the craft and care that goes into shaping every letter and stone.

New Stones

Every new stone begins as a blank surface and becomes something lasting. Carving a new stone is the beginning of a story — a chance to design and create something unique from the very first mark. Each commission starts with clean material and a blank surface, which I shape into a memorial or inscription that feels timeless, personal, and enduring.

The process combines thoughtful design with traditional hand-carving techniques. Letterforms are carefully drawn and then cut with precision, balancing depth, proportion, and rhythm so that the stone speaks with clarity and character. Every new piece is made to honour both the words it carries and the person or story it represents, crafted to stand gracefully for generations to come.

Additional Inscriptions

Adding new inscriptions to existing memorials is a delicate process that demands accuracy, sensitivity, and respect for the original work. Each new letter must sit seamlessly beside those already carved — matching not only the style of the lettering, but also the depth, spacing, and rhythm.

My approach begins with careful study of the existing stone, paying close attention to the proportions, cut, and character of the original hand. Only then do I begin carving, ensuring the new inscription feels as though it has always belonged there. The result is a continuation of the memorial’s story, carried forward with the same care and craftsmanship as the first cut

Raised Lead

Raised lead lettering is a rare and traditional craft, one that has slowly been disappearing in a world of mass production. Each piece requires patience, precision, and a deep understanding of how the material behaves, from shaping the lead to achieving crisp, legible forms.

I’m drawn to this technique because it allows for a level of depth, texture, and permanence that is impossible to replicate with modern methods. Through my work, I aim to push the boundaries of what can be achieved with lead lettering — exploring new designs, scale, and applications while honouring a centuries-old tradition. The goal is to keep this art alive, showing its beauty and versatility in contemporary contexts.

Wood lettering

Wood lettering is a craft that celebrates the natural character of the material, yet it comes with unique challenges. Each commission begins with a careful selection of timber, considering grain, texture, and durability. Unlike stone, the grain in wood can be unpredictable, requiring patience and skill to carve clean, precise letters without splitting or tearing the surface.

Working in wood allows for warmth, depth, and subtlety — the way light catches each cut brings the lettering to life. My approach balances precision with respect for the material, ensuring every piece feels tactile, purposeful, and unique. Through wood, I explore both traditional techniques and creative possibilities, crafting inscriptions and signage that age gracefully while retaining character and clarity.

Carvings

Beyond lettering, I also work in carved designs and decorative motifs in stone. Each piece begins with careful planning, translating ideas and patterns into forms that can be shaped by hand. Working in stone requires patience and precision, as the material’s natural grain and texture influence every cut.

These carvings allow me to explore depth, rhythm, and form, creating pieces that are both visually striking and tactile. Whether it’s a decorative panel, architectural detail, or bespoke artwork, each carving is shaped slowly and deliberately, combining traditional techniques with a creative approach to design. The result is work that feels timeless, enduring, and full of character.

Conservation

Working on listed buildings requires a careful balance of skill, precision, and respect for history. Every project involves copying the existing lettering perfectly — from style and proportion to depth and spacing — and often recutting worn inscriptions to restore their clarity and presence. This careful approach ensures the building’s character is preserved and conservation standards are met.

Designs

Before anything is carved, many of my ideas begin as hand-drawn designs. These drawings allow me to explore form, proportion, and composition, testing how motifs and patterns will work in three-dimensional materials like stone or wood.

Each drawing is a considered study — balancing creativity with practicality — ensuring that when the design moves from paper to material, it translates clearly and beautifully. Whether for lettering, decorative motifs, or bespoke carvings, these drawings are an essential part of the creative process, capturing the vision, rhythm, and character that will eventually come to life in the final piece.
